Weight-loss plateau

A plateau is when your weight stalls even though your habits haven't changed – usually because of water or lower energy expenditure. Normal, often temporary, not a failure.

Ausführlich erklärt

A plateau is a phase when the scales stop moving even though you're doing everything as before – and it's part of almost every weight-loss journey. It feels like failure, but it's mostly just physiology. If you know the reasons, you can stay calm and avoid the most common mistake: eating even less.

Reason one: water. Body weight can fluctuate by 1 to 2 kilograms in a single day – due to salt, carbohydrate stores, your cycle, sore muscles or digestion. That means fat loss can be masked by water for days. Reason two: your energy expenditure has dropped. A lighter body needs less energy, and during a prolonged deficit it also throttles back a little. The deficit that was 500 kcal three months ago might now be just 200. Reason three: your portions have crept up without you noticing, or your workouts have become routine and burn less energy.

What helps: first, wait – people usually only speak of a true plateau after three to four weeks; anything shorter is often just fluctuation. Also measure your waist, which often keeps shrinking while the scales stand still. Second, recalculate your needs; our calorie needs calculator takes your current weight into account. Third, vary your exercise, especially with strength training, which preserves muscle and gives your energy expenditure a little boost. Fourth, spend one to two weeks honestly writing down what really ends up on your plate.

What you shouldn't do: eat less than your basal metabolic rate for long periods or skip meals. That can amplify exactly the adaptation that contributes to the plateau, and it makes cravings and the yo-yo effect more likely. Sometimes a plateau is also a sign that your body has reached a healthy weight where it feels good – and then it's fine to adjust your goal.

Wusstest du? Some experts recommend deliberately taking a diet break at a stable weight after a few weeks in a deficit. In an Australian study (MATADOR, 2018), men who alternated two weeks of deficit with two weeks of break lost more fat than with continuous dieting – whether this applies to everyone is still an open question.
